Sikkim a small state in Indian Union (7,096sq.km) lies in the Eastern Himalaya known for rich biodiversity and a paradise for naturalists. The topography of the region and rich vegetation provides a shelter for abundance of butterflies species. Some of the early collectors claim there are nearly 700 species of species which can be compared to Nepal which has area 20 times bigger than Sikkim and half the total number of butter species found in the Indian subcontinent occur in Sikkim.

Some species such as Teinopalpus imperialis and Meandrusa gyas,  enjoyed a protected status.

110 years ago well known naturalist J. Gamie in his memoirs of butterflies of Sikkim wrote “the Lepcha collectors are most skillful and would compare favorably with those of any in the world.

First ever mention of Sikkim butterflies in the modern literature is in the Hooker’s Himalayan Journals. But the first ever serious report on butterflies of Sikkim was published by H.J. Elwas (1880) in the “proceeding of the Zoological society of London. Later the “Gazetteer of Sikkim”(1890) was brought out in which G.A. Gammie and De Niceville have recorded about 621 species of butterflies and it was followed by series of surveys and studies from different organization and naturalist.

The systematic survey was made in Oct. 1980 with the joint venture of WWF and Fisheroes and Wildlife Department, Govt. of Sikkim, and later on survey made by Sikkim Nature Conservation Foundation Trustees which gave the report that Sikkim has 689 species of butterflies.
